Pu’uhonau O Honaunau National Historical Park, Kona

Visitor Center modifications, a small addition, renovations and ADA work were completed for the National Parks Services at Pu’uhonau O Honaunau National Historical Park in Kona. The work was completed in 2 phases. The first phase was the modification and renovation of the visitor’s center. A project requirement for this phase was that the visitor’s center was to remain operational during the project. Heartwood worked during the same hours as the visitor’s center and utilized a blockade system to station-off work and secure the safety of the center’s visitors. The second phase of the project was an ADA compliant Law enforcement addition. The addition was 472 square feet and had to be elevated to tie into the existing facility. As a law-enforcement addition it included mechanical systems, electrical systems, alarms, and security windows. For the entire project the historical issues surrounding the property had to be addressed. This was a culturally sensitive project. As an example, the lava rock is a historical resource and Heartwood Pacific was requested not to damage any lava rock. Heartwood was the prime contractor and its staff completed the framing, roofing, finish carpentry work and project management.
