Makapu’u and Diamond Head Lighthouses

This historical project, completed for the United States Coast Guard, was the repair and stabilization of the Fresnel lens in both the Makapu’u and Diamond Head Lighthouse on Oahu. This was historically sensitive work, both from the standpoint of the Fresnel lens, but also from the WWII bullet hole in the Makapu’u structure that once removed was specially packaged and delivered to the Coast Guard. There are few Fresnel lens experts available and Heartwood undertook an extensive search to find a subcontract that had the required experience. In addition, a custom glass specialist was utilized to craft the replacement lenses each of which has distinct specifications. At the Diamond Head Lighthouse staff also obtained the necessary security clearances to work on the property and coordinated their activities with property security personnel.
